Modern and Contemporary Art

The VA Museum of Fine Arts is seeking an Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art to assist in the overall operation of this department that comprises 20th- and 21st-century painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and new media.  VMFA has recently re-opened after the largest expansion in its history, including a new 165,000-square foot wing and four-acre sculpture garden.  The successful candidate for this position will play an important role in the expanded initiatives of the Modern and Contemporary department.

Qualifications include knowledge of American and international modern and contemporary art; the ability to manage the daily responsibilities of caring for an extensive permanent collection, to conduct research, and to be involved in all stages of exhibitions.  In addition, this position requires competence in preparing written materials and presenting lectures to professional and lay audiences; experience in identifying and assisting with new acquisitions; practice in budget management and project direction; and an enthusiasm for cultivating donor and community relations.  Applicants must hold an MA in art history or museum studies from a recognized institution; additional graduate work is a plus.  Museum experience is also preferred.   An equivalent combination of training & experience may substitute for this education & experience.  Excellent writing and research skills are required; foreign language familiarity is a plus. The successful candidate will be an energetic and organized person with the ability to switch easily between supporting roles and independent projects. A security background check required.
