Founded in 1913, the Morris Museum explores and celebrates the arts, sciences and humanities through exhibitions, educational programs and the performing arts. The Museum seeks a creative and versatile Associate Curator to join the Exhibitions Division to assist in planning, developing and installing exhibitions in the arts, sciences and humanities. The ideal candidate for this position must be able to work on all aspects of exhibition development, installation and de-installation and be adept at working with extreme care when handling fine art, science specimens and other museum objects. The successful candidate will have a deep commitment to engaging large and diverse audiences through innovative and exciting community-focused exhibitions.
This creative and organized individual, in conjunction with key staff members, will curate exhibitions, schedule, plan, and execute the installation of permanent and temporary exhibitions; curate/develop exhibitions from the Museum's collections and from private lenders; write didactic materials for exhibitions; design exhibitions; prepare budgets; and participate in long-range planning.
Additional responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
. Exhibit installation;
. Managing installers;
. Assist with moving artifacts and specimens to and from the Museum's storage areas and galleries as necessary;
. Routine maintenance of current exhibitions;
. Assisting the Collections Manager as needed; and
. Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
. B.A. degree required, M.A. desirable, plus three years of experience developing, planning and installing exhibitions (art, science, and/or humanities exhibitions) in a museum or gallery setting;
. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills;
. Ability to meet deadlines and manage budgets;
. Experience in collection management, as well as computer database management skills;
. Administrative, budget development and management skills;
. Commitment to community engagement and accessibility;
. Proficiency with computer programs including Word and Excel; and
. The ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, work well independently and with others, and problem solve.
