The Corcoran Library trials trio of databases - designinform
The Corcoran Library is providing trial access to a trio of databases:
designinform – an online design resource offering three databases in one:
Design Abstracts Retrospective – an ongoing indexing and abstracting service that currently includes some 50,000 records of articles from major 20th century design and craft journals. It covers journals not indexed by Design and Applied Arts Index (currently available through the Corcoran Library). For more information, see http://www.designinform.co.uk/dar.htm.
Design ProFILES – a biographical dictionary of nearly 20,000 artists, designers, architects and craftspeople. A ‘biographical dictionary’ of all the artists and designers known to have been associated with the Wiener Werkstätte (1903-1932) is included in latest update of Design ProFILES. This contains numerous Internet links and an extensive bibliography. For more information, see http://www.designinform.co.uk/dp.htm.
ReVIEW – digitized versions of 19th and early 20th century art and design journals. So far this includes The Studio, Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration and Art et Décoration and will soon also include The Poster (6 volumes, 1898-1901). The Poster is indisputably the most important English-language journal devoted to the poster; it is now incredibly scarce. Next year ReView will add the first 17 volumes of The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art (1906-1922), which contains over 5,000 images of contemporary architecture and design. All these titles can be cross-searched. See: http://www.designinform.co.uk/review.htm.
A new feature of designinform is their Research Guides. They’ve just produced the second of the Guides - Free-access, digitized art, architecture, design and craft journals on the Internet, and have expanded Guide No.1 - Internet Sources of Biographical Information. Both Guides can be accessed at: http://www.designinform.co.uk/researchguides.htm.
You can access these three databases through the following link: http://www.designinform.co.uk/database/index.php. If you are off-campus, contact the Library for a username and password. Be prepared to provide your @corcoran.edu e-mail or your Library user ID.
The Library would appreciate your feedback as we evaluate this trial. Please let us know if you have any comments or questions!
