Each afternoon in the summer of 1863, the poet Walt Whitman waited at the corner of Vermont Avenue and L Street NW to observe President Lincoln on his horseback-commute out of the city. Artist Spencer Finch was so inspired by Whitman’s perceived personal connection with th...e president from this brief interaction that he created Passing Cloud to replicate the light and the sensation of this fleeting moment in time.
