Kristina Amelie Haden- Winner of the Constance Bergfors Travel
Kristina Amelie Haden, Masters of Art in Teaching student, has been selected to receive the Constance Bergfors Travel Research Prize for travel and research in summer 2012. Of the many excellent proposals submitted, her project and proposal stood out as a model of art combined with social activism. Her work will have a major impact on two communities, at the Corcoran, as well as in Nicaragua.
Haden will continue her work that she began when she traveled to Nicaragua last year with the art education course Social Justice and Art Education. She will travel to Nicaragua for 21 days this August to work with residents in two communities, La Chureca and Tipitapa. This trip would also finalize her data collection for her thesis research, which examines the ways in which communities come together to resolve an issue or shed light on an issue through art-based activity. Her ultimate goal upon completion of her degree, is to create an art-based non-profit that combines her interest in development work with art as a means of encouraging socio-economic independence.
