Job Title:                                Library Assistant

Number of positions:                1-8 assistants

Work schedule:                    One or more shifts per week for the semester

Days and times:
Mondays-Thursdays – 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Fridays – 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturdays – 10  a.m. to 4 p.m.

Work load:                            4 to 12 hours total per week, plus an additional one to three 6 hour Saturday shifts; additional hours as substitute

Position description:           Under the supervision of the permanent staff, the Corcoran Library student assistants are responsible for administering the information desk, performing circulation services, answering user’s reference questions, performing routine collection maintenance, and providing first level support for all library functions, including technology assistance. In order to properly assist users and make sound judgment calls when completing assigned tasks, student assistants will be knowledgeable about library policies, well-versed in library collections and services, skilled at providing first level technical support for computers and library equipment, and will provide consistent, high-quality customer service at all points of contact with users.

                                                This position will help students develop professional work place skills, expand their resumes, and cultivate references.

Duties:                                Administration and operation of Circulation Desk

  • Provide high-quality customer service to library users
  • Check in/out library materials, and alert staff to problems
  • Ensure the integrity, privacy, and confidentiality of user records and transactions
  • Maintain poise when confronted by complaints or disputes
  • Monitor activity in the library, the level of noise and the use of the facility
  • Maintain awareness of who is coming in and going out of the library and any situations that may need the attention of permanent staff, Public Safety, or Facilities

Assisting library users with basic reference, resource, and technology questions

  • Assist users in finding items through a familiarity with the online catalog, Library of Congress classification system, the layout of library, and its collections
  • Facilitate access to resources in the print and digital collections with the use of the online catalog and research databases
  • Answer directional and informational questions, both library and college-related
  • Provide users with Corcoran Library policies: reserves, loan periods, visitors, printing, appropriate computer use, etc.
  • Provide first level IT support to users with technical problems and questions

Collection maintenance

  • Return circulating books to the stacks and shift materials accurately
  • Inventory/shelf-read areas of the collection to ensure accuracy and locate missing items
  • Receive, sort, check in, and shelve periodicals and newspapers
  • Shift books and participate in space planning

Operation of the library (in the absence of permanent staff)

  • Responsible for first level response to facility malfunctions and ensuring safety of library occupants
  • Coordinate with Security to open and close the library according to schedule

Training/Requirements:     Library assistants must attend twomandatorygroup trainings at the start of the semester on general library procedures and FERPA policy, time and date TBD upon hire. (This applies to new and returning workers, as several procedures have changed. Only extreme and unexpected emergencies will be excused.)

                                                Individual training will be given during the first few work shifts.

                                                Informal training occurs throughout the year as questions arise.

  • Ability to lift 30lbs and push 50lbs
