Pre-College Portfolio Development
The Corcoran’s intensive summer programs in Pre-College Portfolio Development are designed to prepare rising high school juniors and seniors for college admission and undergraduate success in the fields of fine art and design. The programs, which carry two undergraduate credits for each two weeks of study, take full advantage of the distinctive resources of the Corcoran College of Art + Design, including its renowned faculty of artist-educators and its unique position amid the cultural resources of Washington, D.C.
Half the day is spent in drawing classes, which include exercises in still life, landscape, perspective, and the figure, utilizing the academic tradition of the nude model. Two-week electives in painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, and digital animation allow students to develop and strengthen skills in another medium.
Lectures and museum tours introduce students to topics in art history, expand their ability to talk about art, and engage them in critical discussion while face to face with important works. Introductory workshops—mandatory for residential students and optional for day students—in ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, and printmaking are scheduled on several mid-week evenings.
On the final Friday of each two-week session, a Pre-College exhibition is held in the Corcoran’s Gallery 31 and White Walls galleries. Parents, other family members, and friends are invited to attend the “opening” reception to congratulate the artists and view their new work.

Drawing on the Corcoran’s nationally recognized faculty, this two-week residential program combines lectures, visits to museums and galleries, individual critiques, and ample studio and shooting time. Typical day sessions include a lecture by a faculty member or guest speaker, a showing of great images that bear on the day’s topic, and an open-ended assignment that enlarges each student’s understanding of how photography functions on a purely aesthetic basis. Students work both digitally and with film, and experiment with a variety of photographic genres and subjects.
