
The Corcoran College of Art + Design is pleased to announce the 2006 Summer Study Abroad Program in partnership with the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts and Sotheby’s Institute of Art–London.
Tuition
The cost of the programs in Greece is $ 2,270 for 3.0 credits ($1,135
per 1.5 credit course) plus a $35 registration fee. A $500 deposit is required at the time of
registration and is fully refundable through March 31, 2006. Final payment is due April 3.
No refunds will be issued after this date. Price includes instruction
and studio fees. Additional fees for housing and meals are noted
for the individual programs.
The costs of the Sotheby's programs in London are £2,950 (including accommodation) or £2,200 (without accommodation) per program. Please note that these fees are given in Pounds Sterling and must be paid directly to Sotheby's. Corcoran cannot accept registrations for Sotheby's courses.
Students are required to purchase health and accident insurance at a minimal cost while enrolled in these programs.
Credit Requirements
Students must enroll for at least 3.0 credits (two 1.5 credit courses
in the two-week Greece program). The four-week summer programs at
Sotheby's Institute of Art–London are 6.0 credit courses.
Financial Aid
Students enrolled in degree programs may be eligible for financial
aid through their home institution.
Registration
The Corcoran study abroad classes are rigorous, college-level classes.
Students will be expected to attend classes and complete assignments.
Most classes are open to all skill levels, but students should consult
individual course descriptions for prerequisite or experience requirements.
Students must be high school graduates and at least 18 years of age.
Registration in study abroad classes requires approval of the Department.

SKOPELOS, GREECE
Skopelos Foundation for the Arts
Skopelos Island, Greece
Experience the unique and inspiring environment of the island of Skopelos,
Greece.
Steeped in 3,000 years of Greek history and tradition, the Greek island
of Skopelos is home to the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts. Located
above the village on a horseshoe bay surrounded by beaches, olive groves
and friendly people, Skopelos offers artists a stimulating environment
for creative work. The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts is a non-profit
foundation housing several large new studios. Its mission is to provide
space for artists from all over the world to experiment and grow through
the artistic process.
Housing
Students may arrange for housing directly through the Skopelos Foundation.
The approximate cost of housing is $400 for double accommodations
and $500 for single accommodations for the two-week period. Breakfast
is included Monday – Friday. These rates are subject to change
due to currency fluctuations.
Travel
Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to
Athens. Students may travel to Athens with a Corcoran faculty member
working through Scandia World Travel, Inc. by calling (800)722-8091.
The Greece trip will begin with two nights in Athens (June 3rd and June 4th) to visit the
spectacular museums and historical sites, staying in a local hotel.
Students should arrive in Athens by June 3rd to join the group in touring
Athens. Students will leave as a group from Athens to Skopelos on June
5th. Students will return to Athens as a group on June 20th. A moderate
fee will be charged for the hotel stay in Athens and transportation
between Athens and Skopelos.

Landscape, Symbol, Pattern and Abstraction – Painting the Greek

Students will focus on the landscape of Greece and the impact of the air, the light, the color, and the terrain of the island on the people and architecture. Through drawing and painting, students will investigate the history and development of symbols, patterns, and the architecture of the island. Students will work from direct observation, from ideas and imagination, and from observation towards abstraction. Students will consider the ideas and beliefs that define image making in different cultures – the kind of images that are created, their meaning and their function. Limit 10 students.
Traditional and Experimental Watercolor

This course will emphasize the building of a visual vocabulary
and developing it into a personal language of expression. Each day will
begin with an introduction and discussion of specific material and
technical possibilities as well as general discussion about studio
practice and working methods. Studies will focus on general design,
drawing, color, and composition; conceptual thoughts used in developing
subject and content; art historical and contemporary references. Each
day students begin with a review and critique of the previous day’s
work. Following this daily introduction, students will experience a
period of experimentation with material, color, and mark making. Limit
10 students.
The Painterly Print

This course is designed for both painters and printmakers interested in exploring the possibilities of the unique print. A wide range of both monotype and monoprint techniques will be demonstrated, from painterly to more graphic print processes. These will include simple single-plate painting methods to multi-plate registered color printing. Collage and mixed media techniques will further inform the student with the skills to translate their ideas and images into this versatile printmaking medium. Limit 8 students.

This course is designed to expose the student and traveler to the many possibilities inherent in the artist-made book as a vehicle of self expression. Ideal for the painter, printmaker and photographer, a variety of book forms will be covered including Portfolios, Concertina, Pamphlet, Japanese and Coptic bindings. When taken in conjunction with the other studio offerings, students will address content and the many ways the handmade book can become a document of a student’s personal journey, both literal and figurative. Limit 8 students.
The Screenprint Revealed

A non-linear approach to screen-printing will be explored in this two week survey course. The excavated print, print as adhesive and the wax and relief surface are some of the new approaches that will be explored in this “bridge medium” between painting, photography, and relief printing. Students will gain experience with local materials, such as organic dusts and powders, from the island. Limit 7 students.

A new and versatile relationship has developed between the use of
water-based screenprinting over the past few years that has expanded
its potential for image making and its adaptability to absorbing ideas
and methods of image-making from other media. These ideas will be explored
in this advanced level class. In addition, part of the class time will
be devoted to working in collaboration with a professional artist on
their personal projects. One semester of screenprinting at the Corcoran
is a required prerequisite for this limited enrollment course.

Four-Week Programmes For Postgraduate and Undergraduate Students
Sotheby's Institute of Art–London is among the world's leading institutions, offering advanced degrees and specialized courses in art scholarship, connoisseurship and art business. Contemporary Art in London

This course looks at one of today's most vibrant centres for art. Students
study the growth of the London art scene, its ideas, personalities
and machinations. Critics, dealers and artists give lectures and visits
are made to artists' studios, museums, sculpture parks, galleries and
Sotheby's auction house.
British and European Decorative Art
Faculty: Elisabeth Bodgan, Lis Darby, Jane Gardiner
This course covers the 17th to 20th centuries offering students comprehensive
instruction in decorative art objects. Lectures are supplemented by
visits to London's collections of decorative art, museums, and galleries
and country house excursions. London's architectural history is studied
through walking tours.
A Century of Design
Faculty: Lis Darby
This course explores the exciting developments in design and the decorative
arts from 1900 to the present day. Lectures are supplemented by visits
to museums and houses, and to galleries and dealers specializing in
20th century and contemporary design.
Art and Its Markets
Faculty: David Bellingham
This course looks at four different types of objects and examines how
they are identified and catalogued and how quality and value is assessed.
Students study how auctions are marketed, organised and run.
Art Marketing
Faculty: Catherine Morel
This course serves as an introduction to the marketing of the visual
arts and top-end luxury commodities. Issues such as branding, retaining
product exclusivity as well as the fundamental principles of supply
and demand are examined.
