Attending high school at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Gloria Lopez always had a passion for creating. Although she decided to shift gears for college and began studying criminal justice, it soon became clear that she missed art, so she scheduled an appointment to meet with the Admissions Department at the Corcoran. “As I toured the school, I instantly fell in love with what I saw on the walls,” she says.
Upon transferring to the Corcoran, Gloria studied Fine Art because she wanted to develop a broad base of skills, including painting, sculpture, metalwork, and woodwork. During her junior year, Gloria discovered her love for teaching and set her sights on the long-term goal of earning a Master of Arts in Teaching degree at the Corcoran.
Her program is balanced between the studio and the classroom. One of her favorite teaching classes has been her Art and Adolescence class; she worked in several middle schools in the area and developed lesson plans, taught, and began to develop a professional network.
Some of her favorite memories during her time in the program are from traveling to both Mexico and India as part of her studies. In Mexico, she worked in an orphanage and taught printmaking and sculpture. “At first, the students were very timid,” she recalls, “but over time they became excited and confident in their creations.”
Gloria has also taught in several schools in the area. It was a huge change taking on the classroom for the first time, but by the end of her commitment with the school, she found she loved what she was doing so much that she stayed on through the end of the school year.
