Graduate Student Profiles

BFA / MAT Art Education

The Corcoran offers a five-year Bachelors of Fine Arts/Master of Arts in Teaching dual-degree program that allows undergraduate BFA students in any major the opportunity to pursue both degrees at the onset of their studies. The rigorous, 158-credit, five-year program is an accelerated version of the typical six-year commitment to the traditional four-year undergraduate degree, followed by two more years of graduate studies. Like other MAT students at the Corcoran, BFA/MAT students complete a teaching internship and a research thesis in their graduate phase that builds upon their first four years of study. Core courses prepare students for licensure requirements to be eligible teach in the District of Columbia, with substantial or complete correspondence to current guidelines for the neighboring states of Maryland and Virginia.

Gain Real World Experience

The program is designed to support career development with a required educational internship or school placement, and a graduate-level research thesis. All students participate with Corcoran student/faculty teams in a variety of school, community, partnership programs starting in the sophomore year.
