Gillian Elliott

Dr. Gillian Elliott is currently writing a book about Romanesque Sculpture and the Politics of the Hohenstaufen Dynasty in the Holy Roman Empire. She received a Samuel H. Kress Research Award from the ICMA in 2010 to travel to Northern Italy. This award will help Elliott conclude research for a new article on the sculpture program of the church of San Michele Maggiore in Pavia. She also recently published Victorious Trampling at Sts. Peter and Paul at Andlau and the Politics of Frederick Barbarossa in Zeitschrift Kunstgeschichte (2009), which grew out of a chapter of her dissertation on Romanesque sculpture in Alsace, France.

Professor Elliott has been teaching at the Corcoran since 2007. Her work on medieval sculptural programs has been incorporated into a new course on the Art of the Monument. She also teaches Medieval Legends in Art and Literature and survey courses in Art History. Elliott especially enjoys engaging students in discussions about ties between the art of the past and art of the contemporary world. She frequently utilizes the treasures of the Smithsonian museums, which are situated next door to the Corcoran classrooms.
