Judy Southerland

Judy Southerland's studio practice emphasizes an open approach to painting, and a single work may include more than one style and technical approach. She has earned this cross-media vocabulary by developing rigorous skills in several media including oil and acrylic painting, watercolor, screenprinting, and drawing. Her work may require sewing, woodworking, or metalwork, and she likes pulling those crafts into the fine art arena. Her recent work considers human actions and the idea of the quest, and in 2011 she received an Artist Fellowship from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities to support new work. In 2011, Ms. Southerland's work was selected for Strictly Painting 8 at McLean Project for the Arts in McLean, VA, and for the 34th National Art on Paper Exhibition at MFA Circle Gallery in Annapolis, MD. Solo exhibitions include Borderland, 2010 at Greater Reston Arts Center, Reston, VA; Close to Far Away, 2008, Miami University, Middletown, OH; and In/Out of Place, 2007, The Arts Club of Washington, Washington, D.C.. Recent group shows include Catalyst at the Katzen Arts Center, Washington, D.C.; Crossing Lines, Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, Wilmington, DE; and 20th National Drawing & Print Exhibition, College of Notre Dame, Baltimore, MD. Ms. Southerland received an MFA in Painting from American University and a BS in Art Education from Auburn University. Along with teaching painting, Ms. Southerland curates shows for emerging artists in the Washington D.C. area.
