The Corcoran Gallery of Art purchased the Randall School property in Southwest Washington in November 2006 with the intent to create a mixed-use arts and residential complex. The Randall School is located at 65 I Street SW, and the development plan retains the three historically significant buildings that front “I” Street, which will incorporate approximately 100,000 square feet of college art space to be used by the Corcoran College of Art + Design. The remainder of the development will be residential units.
The Corcoran is partnering with Monument Realty to develop the property. Monument is one of Washington’s top-performing and most active real estate developers with a strong commitment to the Southwest community. Its successful portfolio includes more than 5,000 residential units, more than 5.2 million square feet of Class A office space, and three luxury hotels.
When developed, the Randall campus will be a combination of historic preservation and the creation of an innovative state-of-the-art facility, much in line with the Corcoran’s own identity as an arts institution that dually educates through its Gallery and College programs, as well as through its collections. The Randall property will serve as the Corcoran’s third College campus. It will be the home of undergraduate classroom and studio space for many of the equipment-intensive subject areas, such as sculpture and ceramics, as well as student exhibition space. Classes will continue to be taught at both the Seventeenth Street (Gallery) and Georgetown sites.
The first undergraduates to use the new facility will be the entering class in fall 2011. Development of the facility is part of the Corcoran’s current strategic planning process, aimed at, among many priorities, expanding the college’s program scope, student base and competitive edge.
Acquiring the Randall School provides mutual benefits to both the Corcoran and to the city of Washington. It will bring a vibrant community of young artists to the Southwest community and the city at large. At the same time, it will allow the College to expand its facilities and offer our students state-of-the-art studios and advanced creative technologies while enhancing the Corcoran’s unique milieu: a museum-school in the heart of the nation’s capital.
